Art Inspired by Poetry & Prose

Friday 25 March - Sunday 24 April 2016

An exciting exhibition of selected work by 30 British artists and makers showing a wonderful range of work inspired by poetry, prose & text, in a wide range of mediums and styles.

Painting - printmaking - textiles - ceramics - glass - jewellery - sculpture.

Below is just a small selection of the work that will be on show during this exhibition.

"This is our Story" by Alx Creations

3D. Glass & recycled book.

'History lies around us Memories lie within us Both are moments in time Some are ephemeral; some are carved in our souls.'

Alx Creations endeavours to hold those memories and the emotions they evoke, in beautiful, handcrafted glass.

This is one of five pieces by Alx Creations included in the exhibition.

Altered Books by Alexi Francis

The exhibition features two beautiful altererd books by Alexi, finished with pen & ink, a mixed media collage and a mixed media canvas, as well as her book & cards.

Annet Stirling

'Seasons' by Annet Stirling

We have 8 of these unusual laser-cut corten steel panels designed by Annet Stirling, including a series of four panels with quotes based on the seasons.

Treated to have a pre-rusted finish these panels create a striking effect indoors or out.

Annet Stirling trained as a graphic designer in the Netherlands before studying lettering at the City and Guilds of London Art School with Berthold Wolpe, and then finishing her education as an apprentice with Richard Kindersley.

"The Thicket" by Flora McLachlan

A gorgeous new etching by the wonderful Flora McLachlin. Inspired by by the hunt for the white hart in Malory's Morte d'Arthur

"The Book of Lost Things" by Janie Graham

Exhibiting at Obsidian Art for the first time, Janie Graham has created five wonderful book & paper sculptures, which are both clever and beautiful objects.

"We are such stuff as dreams are made on..." by Jeremy White

A stoneware sculpture hand built by Jeremy especially for the exhibition.

Inspired by Prospero's speech in The Tempest by William Shakespeare (the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death in 1616 falls on April 23rd this year).

"Ancient Wisdom" by Kim Major-George

A beautiful hand-produced collagraph with gold leaf detailing by Kim Major-George.

Part of a collection of a collaborative project with poet, Steve Thorp. The exhibition features two pieces by Kim.

Poetry Tiles by Mel Chambers

The exhibition includes some of Mel Chamber's gorgeous ceramic tiles featuring extracts from some of her favourite poetry and quotes.

"All the World's a Stage" by Mychael Barratt

We couldn't not include Mychael Barratt - one of our favourite artists here at Obsidian - well known for his Shakespeare inspired pieces through his work with The Globe Theatre.

This wonderful etching & aquatint cleverly incorporating references to all of Shakespeare's plays.

"We're All Mad Here" by Paper Panda

Paper panda's wonderful papercuts - intricately cut words & images from Alice and Fairytales suspended over book pages. Beautiful.

"You Are Always New...." by Sam Cannon

We are deighted to introduce the work of Sam Cannon who is exhibiting at Obsidian Art for the first time.

We have four original paintings and a selection of her prints and cards. All incorporate text - beautiful phrases & quotes. Gorgeous pieces to treasure.

"Words Have Wings" by Sophie Court

Sophie has created a lovely range of assemblages over text.

"Snow in a Dark Night" by Sue Nicholls

Three wonderful machine embroidered textile pieces by Sue Nicholls who is exhibiting at Obsidian Art for the first time.

The pieces are are all inspired by the graphic imagery that the words of Robert Graves’ poem - Like Snow suggested to Sue.

A series of five woodcuts incorporating self-penned verse by Valerie Sims, also exhibiting at Obsidian Art for the first time.

"Byron" by Jazmin Velasco

A hand-produced engraving by Jazmin Velasco inspired by "So We'll Go No More a Roving" by Lord Byron.

"Though the night was made for loving,
And the day returns too soon,
Yet we'll go no more a roving
By the light of the moon."
